1 bowl for mixing
1 measuring cup (for the water and the food colouring)
1 mixing spoon
2 cups plain flour (all purpose)
2 tablespoons canola oil (vegetable oil and coconut oil work too)
1/2 cup of salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 cup of hot water
10 drops of food colouring
*Makes enough for about 10 students
Place 2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of salt, 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar and 2 tablespoons of oil in a large mixing bowl
Mix the ingredients
Fill the measuring cup with 1 cup of hot water from the tap
Add 10 drops of food colouring to the hot water
Stir the water
Add the coloured water to the bowl with the dry ingredients
Stir continuously until it becomes sticky
Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it for a couple of minutes until it is no longer sticky
Enjoy!
Salt and flour together produce a 'mixture' when they are combined. When the water and food colouring mix they form a solution. When all the ingredients are mixed in together and kneaded, a new substance is formed because chemical reactions have taken place. This new substance is playdough.
