1 glass jar
Stovetop
1 pot
1 cup of water
3 cups of sugar
Liquid flavouring (optional)
1 skewer
1 tablespoon
1 spoon
1 plate
1 pipe cleaner
1 funnel
Pour one cup of water into the pot and bring it to a boil on the stove
Add one cup of sugar and stir until it is dissolved (it will disappear)
Add the second cup of sugar and stir until it is dissolved (it will disappear)
Add the third cup of sugar and stir until it is as dissolved as you can get it (it will not fully disappear)
Add 1 tablespoon of your flavouring (optional)
Stir
Bring to a boil and then remove from heat
Sprinkle some sugar on the plate
Wet the tip of your skewer with water then roll it through the sugar until it is coated
Let it sit until it fully dries
When the sugar water is fully cool pour it into the jar using your funnel
When the skewer is fully dry put it into the jar so it is covered in the sugar water but not touching the bottom or sides (you may need to cut it)
Tie the pipe cleaner around the top and attach it to the spoon
Lie the spoon across the top of the jar so the skewer is suspended in the solution (sugar water)
Let it sit for a week
Take out the rock candy
Enjoy!
The sugar water solution contains more sugar than can stay in the solution, this is why we added sugar even after it wouldn't fully dissolve anymore. As the water cools, the sugar comes out of the solution and attaches to the skewer forming crystals.
